The Sith’s Rule of Two Retconned in New ‘Star Wars’ Book

Star Wars - Sith Rule of Two

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace famously established a key new piece of mythology in a galaxy far, far away. Along with the introduction of the meddlesome midi-chlorians, it also explained the Sith’s “The Rule of Two,” where there was only a master and an apprentice, no more, no less. That came straight from Yoda, which felt like a pretty solid source of knowledge about the sworn enemies of the Jedi. However, if a new Star Wars book is accurate, that rule has been modified.

ScreenRant took the time to read the Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker junior novelization, the one meant for kids. In that book, Rey reads through some of the ancient Jedi text which says:

“The Prime is one, but the Jedi are many. The Sith were Many but often emerge Ruled by Two. The Seeds of the Jedi have been Sown throughout the Galaxy, on Ossus, Jedha, Xenxiar, and Others. The Sith have no Seeds, since what they Bury does not Grow. They are the Despoilers of Worlds, and have Laid to Waste once Fertile Habitats such as Korriban, Ziost, Ixigul, Asog, and Others.”

Notice how the text reads that the Sith are “Ruled by Two” rather than having a rule of only two Sith existing at any given time. That’s something that has been proven wrong over the years anyway thanks to the survival of Darth Maul while Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader ruled the galaxy. And let’s not forget about the Sith Inquisitors that have popped up recently. But what probably forced this to be addressed is all the Sith cultists who were on Exegol. With this more accurate interpretation, we know that more than two Sith can be out there, something that makes much more sense to ensure the survival of the dark side of the Force.

It’s also interesting to note that the text mentions Korriban, known as the ancestral homeworld of the Sith Empire non-canon Star Wars “legends,” as well as other locations previously established in other stories. Korriban was already mentioned in the Star Wars Myths and Fables book released a little while back, but perhaps this a stealthy way of pushing certain elements from previous Star Wars media so they can be included in the upcoming publishing initiative Star Wars: The High Republic.

Fans have wanted to see more characters and details from Star Wars Legends incorporated back into Star Wars canon for a long time now. They’ve gotten their wish a few times, including and perhaps most satisfyingly with the return of Grand Admiral Thrawn. But the introduction of Exegol had many wishing Korriban was introduced into the movies instead. Perhaps we might see that happen sometime down the road.
